What the hell is drift!? OK , if you don't know what drift is , was the rock you've been living under comfortable?? WAKE UP! Drifting is the latest thing to hit the import scene in Aus and US , even though those Japs have been sliding through apex's for around 16 years now. Well drifting is basically approaching a corner , then losing traction in the rear wheels and ultimately getting the car sideways ... and the skill is in trying to keep it sideways for as long as possible through a corner , the better you get , the more speed you can carry. Now the basics are settled I'll tell you how a drift competition is run. In Australia you can expect around 40 - 50 overall competitors in a meeting. There are two classes , Factory and Privateer. Factory class is all the cars that are owned by garages , James Vahoumis's red S14.5 is an example. Privateer class is all the people who own their drift cars. An example of this is Beau Yates's old AE86 ( he now runs a JVC sponsered WRX ) The field is cut down to the best 16 and battles are run for each class , two cars drift together and judges announce who they pick to move on to the next round. This battle process is repeated untill there is a 1st , 2nd and 3rd place in each class. Now a common mistake made by most people is the assumption that drifting is some form of "race", where the first to pass the finish line wins. With drift, each competitor is judged on each corner, they are judged on speed, angle, excitement (how the car looks mid-drift) and style. A score is given to each driver, and , no suprises here , the higest score moves on to the next round. Some factors that will attract extra points from the judges are : smoke, pass moves, hand gestures out the window and the old door-open-mid-drift. So there you have it! If you bothered to read all this .. thanks! Send us a email and we'll post you some sort of drift-related prize! |
Drift Tips WE have no drift tips other than have fun. All you need for drift is some decent power, a Rear Wheel Drive car ( front wheel drives also work but nowhere near as well) a handbrake and a manual transmission! If all that is set , then i suggest contacting www.initialdrift.com.au and getting some drift lessons! Who know's you could be Australia's answer to the almighty Ken Nomura!
